The history of necklaces

Necklaces have a very long and interesting history. During the Egyptian age, craftsmen used different materials to make necklaces, such as bone, ivory and precious stones. Even the Etruscans, specialized in the use of gold, used to make and wear necklaces. 

We have to wait until the 15th century to reach the complete maturation of the production of these jewels: necklaces became more elegant and numerous innovative models were proposed. During the Renaissance there was a further diffusion of gold necklaces and pearls began to be widely used.

The necklaces of Nicotra Di San Giacomo are created using precious material, such as gold, silver and silk. The innovation of this brand comes from making silver and silk necklaces, combining two elegant materials that are not usually used together.

Types of necklaces

There are different types of necklaces. These jewels can be classified according to the materials used for their realization and according to their size. Our necklaces can be worn together with our jewels in silk and gold and our hand-woven 925 silver bracelets. 

Necklaces adherent to the neck

In the category of necklaces adherent to neck we have:

• Collar: adheres to the mid-neck and has a length between 30 and 35 cm;

• Choker or strangolino necklace: adheres to the base of the neck and has a length between 35 and 41 cm;

• Princess necklace: with a length between 45 and 50 cm;

• Matinée necklace: with a length between 56 and 58 cm.

Necklaces adherent to the sternum

In the category of necklaces adherent to the sternum we have:

• Opera necklace: with a length between 75 and 90 cm;

• Rope and Lariat necklace: with a length greater than 90 cm.

The silk and silver necklaces of Nicotra Di San Giacomo

For our laboratory necklaces represent one of the greatest successes. We make necklaces by combining Renaissance weaving techniques with contemporary and experimental workmanship respecting the ancient Italian goldsmith tradition.

Our Twist necklaces are made with silk and silver and can be classified into handmade necklaces. We use micro-diamond silk threads in 925 silver, so we get necklaces in which silk is really an integral part of the jewel.
